Abstract: Non desiderare la roba d’altri, “né il suo campo, né il suo schiavo, né la sua schiava, né il suo bue, né il suo asino, né alcuna delle cose che sono del tuo prossimo” (Dt 5,21) recita la Bibbia. Il desiderio e l’invidia, la bramosia e la cupidigia sono al centro di questo intrigante film composto da tre storie diverse ma non distanti tra loro. La madre del regista, da poco rimasta vedova, riceve una lettera da parte di un suo spasimante che ha atteso 45 anni per rivelarsi. Una “personal shopper” per ricchi racconta la sua dipendenza dalla merce. Un gruppo di scienziati rivelano la loro brama di raggiungere l’inarrivabile Marte. Desideri che risiedono ovunque e che avvolgono ogni cosa: “Là dov’è il tuo tesoro, sarà anche il tuo cuore” (Mt 6,21). De Putter partecipa ad un film collettivo sui 10 Comandamenti e prende in consegna il decimo, il comandamento che riguarda le intenzioni del cuore, che bandisce dall’orizzonte umano l’invidia e cerca di controllare il disordine delle cupidigie. È possibile controllare, gestire ed annullare i desideri? La risposta è in quelle storie attraversate dall’elettrica tensione del desiderio e nella serafica intelligenza di un asino che si inerpica per i sentieri tortuosi dei Pirenei.
Thou shalt not covet “(…) thy neighbour’s wife, nor his house, nor his field, nor his slave, nor his slave-girl, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that be his” (Dt 5,21). So says the bible. Desire and jealousy, greed and covetousness are the subjects in this intriguing film made of three separate stories that are different but not so distant from each other. The film director’s mother, who has recently been widowed, receives a letter from a suitor who has been waiting for 45 years to convey his love. A personal shopper for the rich confesses her addiction to merchandise and goods. A group of scientists illustrate their yearning for the unreachable, planet Mars. Desires lying everywhere and enveloping everything: “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also” (Mt 6, 21). Jos De Putter has taken part in a collective film about the Ten Commandments. In particular, he has dealt with the 10th, the commandment which regulates the intentions of one’s heart, bans jealousy from the human horizon, and tries to control the chaos of covetousness. Is it possible to control, manage, and nullify desires? The answer is to be found in those stories that are electrified by the tension of desire as well as in the seraphic intelligence of a donkey clambering up the curvy paths in the Pyrenees.
