Abstract: ll Lazio è una terra ricca di contraddizioni: costruzione e distruzione, luoghi che scompaiono e rovine che risorgono. È la regione dei mutamenti improvvisi e dei mille paesaggi, delle civiltà arcaiche e dell'antichissima presenza umana. È una terra dalle emozioni forti e sottili e allo stesso tempo estremamente eterogenea e in larga parte ancora sconosciuta ai più; per questo lontana, nel complesso, dalle facili etichette e dai banali stereotipi del turismo moderno. Una storia imponente e gloriosa. Gli italici, gli etruschi, i romani, hanno costruito gli uni sulle rovine degli altri, sullo sfondo le guerre tribali, i saccheggi, gli assedi, occupando e ri-occupando città rase al suolo dagli eserciti a meno delle cinte murarie. Ma, a parte le epoche più remote che ci hanno lasciato vestigia ben conosciute ai più, è meno noto è il fenomeno delle 'città morte' moderne, spesso abitate in epoche antichissime, il cui abbandono si è consumato a partire dal Medioevo, fino ad arrivare quasi ai giorni nostri. Esiste dunque un Lazio diverso, affascinante e inesplorato, spesso ignorato dalle guide più conosciute e che tuttavia non mancherà di sorprendere il viaggiatore curioso e avventuroso. Isole galleggianti, laghi che scompaiono e riappaiono periodicamente, impronte di santi, demoni e miscredenti, simboli e chiese templari. Poi ancora, presenze spettrali, acropoli ciclopiche, voragini impressionanti e grotte arcane, percorsi iniziatici scolpiti nella roccia.
Latium is a land full of contradictions: construction and destruction, places that disappear and ruins that rise again. It is the region of sudden changes and a thousand landscapes, of archaic civilizations and ancient human presence. It is a land of strong and subtle emotions and, at the same time, extremely heterogeneous and largely still unknown to most people; for this reason it is far from the easy labels and banal stereotypes of modern tourism. An impressive and glorious history. The Italics, the Etruscans, the Romans, have built one on the ruins of the other, in the background the tribal wars, the looting, the sieges, occupying and re-occupying cities razed to the ground by the armies to less than walls. Apart from the most remote epochs that have left us vestiges well known to most people, less well known is the phenomenon of modern 'dead cities', often inhabited in ancient times, whose abandonment has been consumed since the Middle Ages, until almost the present day. There is, therefore, a different Lazio, fascinating and unexplored, often ignored by the best known guides, but which will not fail to surprise the curious and adventurous traveler. Floating islands, lakes that periodically disappear and reappear, footprints of saints, demons and unbelievers, Templar symbols and churches. Then again, ghostly presences, cyclopean acropolis, impressive chasms and arcane caves, initiation paths carved into the rock.
