Abstract: Nel cuore di una città nordamericana, immigrati haitiani e italiani in pensione curano i loro giardini, piantati su un vasto lotto vuoto che sarà presto sostituito da un'autostrada. Il film si svolge all'interno di questo terreno un tempo agricolo, ora dominato da linee elettriche ad alta tensione, dove ogni primavera è testimone della rinascita di questi 'giardini in esilio'. Ne emerge un quadro lussureggiante, pastorale, mentre gli echi dell'onnipresente città risuonano fuori campo. Su questo sfondo, una doppia minaccia è in agguato: quella dell'imminente scomparsa di questo spazio verde, che sarà sostituito dall'asfalto, e quella, più drammatica, della scomparsa di una generazione di immigrati, nati in campagna ma urbanizzati dal destino, giunti qui alla ricerca delle loro radici rurali, facendo rivivere le tradizioni secolari della terra che hanno lasciato. Nel corso delle stagioni di semina, raccolta e conversazione amichevole, il tema comune è quello della terra: la terra dove nasciamo, la terra che lasciamo, la terra dove mettiamo radici, la terra che ci accoglie o ci respinge, la terra che coltiviamo e che ci sostiene, la terra che sogniamo o che desideriamo, la terra dove moriamo e siamo sepolti, e la terra che altri distruggono per fare autostrade. La cronaca che ne risulta somiglia a una memoria felice, dove la poesia e i destini individuali dei personaggi si mescolano con le questioni ambientali e migratorie che dominano il nostro secolo.
In the heart of a North American city, a cast of retired Haitian and Italian immigrants tend their gardens, planted on a vast vacant lot soon to be replaced by a highway. The film takes place within this formerly agricultural wasteland, now dominated by high-voltage power lines, where each passing spring is witness to the rebirth of these 'gardens in exile'. A lush, uniquely pastoral tableau emerges, while echoes of the omnipresent city resonate off camera. Against this backdrop, a double menace lurks: that of the impending disappearance of this green space, to be replaced by asphalt, and that, more dramatic, of the disappearance of a generation of immigrants, born in the countryside but urbanized by fate, who have come here in search of their rural roots, reviving the age-old traditions of the land they left behind. Over the seasons of planting, harvesting and friendly conversation, the common theme that emerges is that of the land: the land where we are born, the land we leave, the land where we set down new roots, the land that welcomes or rejects us, the land we cultivate and that sustains us, the land we dream of or yearn for, the land where we die and are buried, and the land that others lay to waste to make highway. The resulting chronicle resembles a happy memory, where poetry and the individual destinies of the characters intermingle with the environmental and migratory issues dominating our century.
