Abstract: Dall'apartheid alla democrazia. Cosa è essenziale perché la trasformazione abbia successo? La risposta del Sudafrica: una costituzione acclamata per la sua promessa di diritti umani completi, una magistratura indipendente per custodire quei diritti, e una magistratura, trasformata per etnia e genere, capace di rendere giustizia e rivendicare una legittimità perduta. Le donne indossano per la prima volta la toga giudiziaria. Le loro nomine, tuttavia, si muovono a un ritmo lento. Nel 2008 le donne detenevano solo il 18% dei seggi della corte superiore. "Courting Justice" racconta la loro storia attraverso sei donne giudici al lavoro nelle loro aule e nelle camere di tribunale, a casa e nelle comunità in cui hanno vissuto durante l'apartheid. From apartheid to democracy. What is essential for transformation to succeed? South Africa’s answer: a Constitution acclaimed for its promise of comprehensive human rights, an independent judiciary to guard those rights, and a Judiciary, transformed by race and gender, able to render justice and claim a lost legitimacy. Women were to wear judicial robes for the first time. Their appointments, however, moved at a slow pace. By 2008, women held but 18% of the superior court seats. "Courting Justice" is their story, it is told by six women judges while at work in their court rooms and chambers, at home and in the communities where they lived during apartheid. We learn how they confront the challenges - As women working in a male institution, as mothers integrating work and family, as judges burdened with extraordinarily heavy case loads, as judges deciding the fate of those who come before them.
