In the early 1980s, Peter Gabriel composed his first political song 'Biko' and began working with musicians from different parts of the world. The film tells the story of Peter Gabriel's journey from the song 'Biko' to his major musical, political and social initiatives. Gabriel's efforts began with the founding of the World of Music, Arts and Dance Festival (WOMAD) in the early 1980s. There were so many wonderful musicians coming to this festival that, after a few years, Peter Gabriel founded 'Real World Records' to provide these artists with the same opportunities to record and distribute their music as their Western counterparts had. In the 1990s, during the Real World Recording Weeks, Peter Gabriel and Karl Wallinger started to collaborate with a large number of musicians and producers from all over the world. The result of these sessions is called 'Big Blue Ball'. The film gives an idea of how these sessions took place and how collaboration between people from different cultural backgrounds works. By working with musicians from all around the world and touring for the Amnesty International „Conspiracy of Hope“ Tour Peter Gabriel became a very personal insight on the social and political conditions and problems in many countries. This let him to start, over the years, quite innovative political initiatives for Human Rights. His project „Witness“ for example sucessfully promotes the use of technology for Human Rights campaigning. And „The Elders“, a project that he initiated with Richard Branson and that involves worldwide respected people like Nelson Mandela and Kofi Anan, is the realisation of one of his dreams. One could say that Peter Gabriel's work combines philosphy, technology, art and politics. One of his aims is to dissolve the line between 'us and them' and to develop a positive vision of 'globalisation'. The film tries to bring us in touch with the optimistic visions of one of the great artists of our time.
