Abstract: "In un libro di storia viene detto che gli indiani non avevano da mangiare e stavano morendo di stenti e David Thompson (il più autorevole esploratore della Columbia britannica) diede loro del cibo. Ma come può essere accaduto? È impossibile. Avvenne esattamente il contrario, la verità è che il mio bisnonno impedì che Thompson venisse ucciso dai giovani guerrieri". Un racconto orale della tradizione Shuswap ha raggiunto i nostri giorni grazie alle generazioni della famiglia Kinbasket. L’episodio, narrato dal punto di vista indiano, dimostra la generosità dei nativi che osservano in un primo tempo gli esploratori, per poi rendersi conto della loro difficile situazione e portar soccorso agli esploratori bianchi, ormai allo stremo. Shelagh, è la pronipote del capo indiano che ordinò di non uccidere gli esploratori, ma di nutrirli. Ha 99 anni e vive in Canada nel British Columbia. Dino Degrussa, è un emigrante ticinese proveniente da Olivone e scomparso anni orsono. A ventidue anni attraversò l’oceano alla volta del Canada per trovare lavoro. Percorse il paese in treno, vivendo grazie ad umili e faticosi impieghi. Dino affidò i suoi ricordi di viaggio un diario, dove si alternano note cronachistiche a riflessioni profonde. Dai ricordi di Shelagh scopriamo che i due s’incontrarono e si sposarono, unendo così in una grande famiglia due sponde opposte dell’Oceano.
"In a history book it is said that the Indians had no food and were dying of starvation, and David Thompson (British Columbia's foremost explorer) gave them food. But how could this have happened? It is impossible. The truth is that my great-grandfather prevented Thompson from being killed by the young warriors. An oral tale from the Shuswap tradition has reached our days thanks to generations of the Kinbasket family. The episode, narrated from the Indian point of view, shows the generosity of the natives who first observe the explorers, then realise their plight and bring help to the exhausted white explorers. Shelagh, is the great-granddaughter of the Indian chief who ordered not to kill the explorers, but to feed them. She is 99 years old and lives in Canada in British Columbia. Dino Degrussa, is an emigrant from Ticino who came from Olivone and died years ago. At the age of twenty-two, he crossed the ocean to Canada to find work. He travelled across the country by train, living off humble and arduous jobs. Dino entrusted his travel memories to a diary, where chronicle notes alternate with profound reflections. From Shelagh's recollections we discover that the two met and married, thus uniting two opposite sides of the ocean in one big family.
