Abstract: La storia di mio padre, Herscu Saim Cahan, originario dalla Romania, che finì a vivere ad Asmara, in Eritrea, ex colonia italiana nel 1948. Vi rimase fino alla fine dei suoi giorni, nel marzo 1974. Durante la giovinezza in Romania fu un attivista sionista nella sua piccola cittadina, fino a diventarne uno dei più noti esponenti, a Bucarest. Durante la seconda guerra mondiale aiutò i compagni ai lavori forzati e aiutò i giovani ad emigrare in Israele. In seguito organizzò anche i superstiti dai campi di concentramento consentendo loro di raggiungere la terra promessa. Abbandonò la Romania con l'avvento del comunismo e dopo essersi rifugiato ad Asmara, essendogli vietata la permanenza nell'ancora non nato stato d'Israele, fu attivo nella piccola comunità ebraica locale.
The story of my father, Herscu Saim Cahan, originally from Romania, who ended up living in Asmara, Eritrea, a former Italian colony in 1948. He stayed there until the end of his days, in March 1974. During his youth in Romania, he was a Zionist activist in his small town, eventually becoming one of its best known exponents in Bucharest. During the Second World War, he helped comrades in forced labour and helped young people emigrate to Israel. Later he also organised survivors from concentration camps, enabling them to reach the promised land. He left Romania with the advent of communism and after taking refuge in Asmara, as he was forbidden to stay in the still unborn state of Israel, he was active in the small local Jewish community.
